Frozen Matcha Latte

All I’ve been craving lately is matcha…and this frozen matcha latte sure hits the spot as the days are getting sunnier and warmer! Unlike most frozen matcha latte recipes that rely on just milk, ice, and sweetener, this version blends in frozen banana and spinach for a naturally creamy texture and a boost of nutrients—while still keeping that classic matcha latte flavor. It has about 13g of plant-based protein, making it a bit more satisfying than your typical iced drink. And while it may look similar to a smoothie, it’s lighter, more drinkable, and designed to taste like a true matcha latte—just thicker, colder, and extra refreshing!

Frozen Matcha Latte Ingredients

  • Soy Milk: Soy milk adds creaminess and a boost of plant-based protein (did you know it has 8g of protein per cup!) You can use sweetened or unsweetened depending on your preference.
  • Spinach: Fresh spinach blends right in and adds extra nutrients without affecting the flavor. If using frozen, about 1/4 cup works well.
  • Frozen Banana: This is key for natural sweetness and a creamy texture. Make sure your banana is frozen for the best consistency.
  • Ice: Ice helps give this its frozen, slushy texture. Use more or less depending on how thick you want it.
  • Medjool Date or Maple Syrup: A date adds natural sweetness and a slightly thicker texture, while maple syrup is a quick and easy alternative.
  • Matcha Powder: Matcha gives this drink its signature flavor and vibrant green color. Use a good quality matcha for the best taste. My favorite type of matcha powder is ceremonial grade because it is less bitter and will give your drink some natural sweetness. I personally have loved this Naoki Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder for years – it creates the perfect smooth texture and it’s flavor is the perfect level of sweetness. If you love matcha try out my matcha chia pudding (personally my fave flavor of chia pudding).
  • Vanilla Extract (optional): Adds a subtle sweetness and enhances the overall flavor, but can be omitted if preferred.

How to Make a Frozen Matcha Latte

  1. Add the soy milk, spinach, frozen banana, ice, Medjool date (or maple syrup), matcha powder, ice and vanilla extract (if using) to a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth and creamy. The texture should be less thick than a smoothie.
  3. Taste and adjust as needed. Add more sweetener for a sweeter drink or a splash of milk to thin it out.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately. I like to finish it off with a strawberry for a pretty garnish!

Variations

  • Make it protein-packed: Add a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder. I love Orgain vanilla protein powder (plant-based).
  • Make it extra creamy: Add a spoonful of dairy-free yogurt (I love Silk, Kite Hill, or Cocojune).
  • Add strawberries: Blend in a handful of frozen strawberries for a fruity twist- this pairs really well with matcha!

Tips for the Best Frozen Matcha Latte

  • Use a ripe frozen banana for natural sweetness and creaminess.
  • Start with less matcha and add more to taste to avoid bitterness.
  • Use a high-quality matcha. Lower quality matcha can taste bitter. Look for a bright green powder for the best flavor.

Common Questions

Is this basically a smoothie or a matcha latte?

It’s kind of in between! It has the creaminess of a smoothie from the banana, but it’s lighter and more drinkable—more like a frozen matcha latte than a thick smoothie.

Can you taste the spinach?

Nope! The matcha completely covers it. The spinach just adds nutrients and color without affecting the flavor

What does a frozen matcha latte taste like?

It’s lightly sweet, creamy, and has that earthy matcha flavor—kind of like a coffee shop matcha latte, but colder and a little thicker.

Can I make this without banana?

Yes, but it will be less creamy and slightly less sweet. You can try adding more ice or a little extra sweetener to adjust

How can I make it higher in protein?

You can use a higher-protein soy milk or add a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder

Notes

Use a high quality matcha powder for the best flavor.  I love Naoki Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder.
This drink is not naturally super sweet- but if you want it sweeter add an extra date, a touch more maple syrup, or sweetened plant milk.
My favorite blender is from Beast – it’s smaller, very strong, and comes with lots of different sized cups (and travel tops/straws). I use it over my Vitamix now! You can get 15% off your purchase through this link.  (I am an affiliate with Beast).
