Orange Ginger Immunity Shots

I’m not spending another dollar on those expensive immunity shots in the grocery store…because homemade immunity shots are SO much better and easy to make! After tasting my fair share over the years (homemade and store-bought), I’ve found the perfect combination of immune-boosting ingredients. Other shots are bitter and almost too potent- I can barely get it down! These homemade immunity shots are actually enjoyable with the perfect balance of orange, lemon, ginger, and turmeric. I keep these stocked in my fridge throughout winter season not only to keep my immune defense strong but also have a yummy mini drink to look forward to every morning.

Instead of reaching for that morning glass of OJ, I’ve been obsessed with these ginger immunity shots the winter. I even got my husband to drink a few a week – and he actually enjoys them! We both agree that if the ginger or turmeric is too potent, it’s like choking down a bitter and pungent pill. So I made sure these are actually balanced and taste good while still giving you a concentrated boost of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

I also stocked my freezer with my Elderberry Immunity Shots for whenever I feel a cold coming on!

Homemade Immunity Shot Ingredients

  • Oranges – Find the biggest oranges at your grocery store. I use 3 cara cara navel oranges.
  • Lemon – You just need one medium-sized lemon for this recipe.
  • Fresh Ginger – Grab a big piece and save the leftover for more immunity shots (or cooking one of my recipes like my Sesame Ginger Chickpeas!)
  • Turmeric powder – For convenience, I use turmeric powder for this recipe, but you can use fresh turmeric if you prefer.
  • Black pepper – This helps the absorption of the turmeric.
  • Cayenne (optional) – Don’t worry – you won’t taste it! Just a pinch can add anti-inflammatory properties from the capsaicin
  • Water – Just 3/4 cup is all you need. You could even consider leaving this out for a more concentrated immunity shot (but it won’t make as many).

How to Make Immunity Shots

1. Peel

Using a knife, trim off the peel of the oranges, lemon and ginger. You can also peel the oranges your fingers.

Tip: Try to get off as much of the white peel as you can while still preserving the inner fruit.

2. Blend

In a high speed blender or food processor, add your orange, lemon, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne (optional) and water.  Blend until fully combined.

Tip: Use a tamper (long plastic stick) if needed to help blend.

3. Strain

Use a fine mesh strainer to strain out the pulp. Use a spoon to help the liquid move through the strainer faster.

4. Bottle

Use a small funnel to pour your immunity juice into the glass bottles. I used 2 oz bottles. You will make ~8 bottles (this can vary slightly depending on the size of your oranges). Top with the cap and place in the fridge.

Storage

The immunity shots will last up to a week in the fridge. You can freeze them for a few months, but make sure to leave extra room on top for the liquid to expand.

Other Additions for These Immunity Shots

  • Honey – vegan honey or regular. Has antibacterial properties.
  • Carrot juice – for more Vitamin A
  • Coconut water – for extra electrolytes
  • Apple cider vinegar – antimicrobial properties and aids in digestion
