Easy Iced Matcha Latte

I’ve been ordering matcha lattes for years and I realized – why couldn’t I make this simple drink right at home? After trying over five different variations, I finally unlocked the secrets to the perfect homemade iced matcha latte….and guess what?! I am proud to say this is the easiest recipe you will find on the internet!

This recipe is the best because:

  • It requires no fancy equipment like bamboo whisks or frothers
  • It mimics the Starbucks matcha latte – shaken to perfection!
  • I found the best combination of matcha powder & milk for the creamiest latté – and no – it doesn’t taste like grass!
  • Includes tips for a clump-free latté.

Now, I understand some might say this isn’t the traditional way to make matcha, but my goal when I create recipes is to make them as accessible as possible…which therefore may include non-traditional steps or ingredients. BUT the goal is to achieve a similar (and possibly better!) result while saving you money from buying expensive, unnecessary ingredients/tools.

Therefore, this recipe does NOT require a bamboo whisk, also called a chasen. Instead we just a good ol’ kitchen whisk that will get rid of matcha lumps.

You also don’t need a milk frother or electric whisk. We are kickin’ it old school with the simple use of a cocktail shaker (or something similar) to combine our matcha. This recipe also mimics how Starbucks makes their iced matcha latte….shaken, not stirred – please!

Iced Matcha Latte Ingredients

What is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from specially grown tea leaves.

It is rich in antioxidants, L-theanine, and has a moderate amount of caffeine (so probably not the best late night drink unless you’re looking for an energy boost).

Matcha has a smooth, slightly sweet, and umami flavor, although this flavor can depend if you get ceremonial vs. culinary grade. Some think it tastes like grass, but with the addition of a creamy milk and a little sweetener, I honestly don’t think you will get much earthy flavor at all!

What is the best matcha powder for a matcha latte?

Did you know there’s two types of matcha powder? I previously had no idea – but they are very different!

Culinary Grade – Slightly more bitter and robust, made from mature leaves. Ideal for lattes, baking, and cooking.

Ceremonial Grade – The highest quality, made from young tea leaves for a naturally sweet, and umami-rich flavor.

The best type of matcha for an iced matcha latte is ceremonial grade because it is less bitter and will give your drink a natural sweetness. I personally have loved this Naoki Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder – it creates the perfect smooth texture and it’s flavor is the perfect level of sweetness.

  • What if I only have culinary grade matcha powder?
  • No worries! This will still work great. You may want to add more maple syrup for additional sweetness, but that is based on your flavor preference!

How to Make an Iced Matcha Latte

1. Whisk matcha powder with warm water in a small bowl

Try to get rid of as many clumps as you can. The shaker will also help get rid of any remaining clumps!

  • Don’t skip Step 1! You need to combine the matcha with warm water first to dissolve it before adding to the shaker. If you skip this step you will have a clumpy iced matcha latte!

2. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice

3. Shake for 30 seconds then pour in a glass

Shake for a full 30 seconds to get rid of remaining clumps. You can pour over ice, or without ice. The drink will already be perfectly chilled thanks to the icey cocktail shaker!

Enjoy!

How to Avoid a Clumpy Iced Matcha Latté

No one wants a mouthful of clumpy powder! Follow these tips for a CLUMP-FREE iced matcha latte:

  1. Whisking with warm water before is a REQUIREMENT. Trust me, I tried so many variations of this recipe, and you simply can’t just shake matcha powder with ice and milk – it still comes out super clumpy no matter how long you shake it! Take a moment to mix the matcha powder with some water water before you add it to the shaker – you’ll be glad you did!
  2. Shake for a full 30 seconds. This will adequately combine your matcha latte and break up any lingering clumps.
  3. If your matcha powder if very clumpy to begin with, consider sifting using one of these cute little mini strainers.

Variations

  • Vanilla Matcha Latte – Add a 1/2-1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Strawberry Matcha Latte – Add 3-4 muddle (or pureed) strawberries
  • Lavender Matcha Latte – Add 1/2-1 tbsp of lavender syrup to the mixture

Tips for 5-Star Iced Matcha Latté

  • Use ceremonial grade matcha powder – It naturally sweeter and less bitter than the culinary matcha powder.
  • If possible, use soy milk – It’s the highest in protein of the plant-based milks and has the creamiest texture (in my opinion)
  • Add a touch of sweetner – I like just 1-2 tsp of maple syrup to elevate the flavor

Common Questions

Is an iced matcha latte healthy?

Yes, an iced matcha latte can be healthy! Matcha is rich in antioxidants. This recipe is low in sugar with only 1 tsp of sweetener and use of ceremonial grade matcha powder which is naturally sweeter than culinary grade.

Is a matcha latte high in caffeine?

This recipe uses 1 tsp of matcha powder which has about 60-70 mg of caffeine; this is considered a moderate amount of caffeine. This is less than a cup of coffee which has about 95 mg (although it can depend on the type of coffee).

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?

No worries! Here are some great alternatives:
– Protein bottle with shaker
– Mason jar with lid
-Reusable water bottle

Notes

Tips/Questions
Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder: This is the highest quality matcha powder made from young tea leaves. It is less bitter and will give your drink a natural sweetness. I personally have loved this Naoki Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder!
Milk: I love soy milk for this recipe for multiple reasons: it’s naturally very creamy and higher in protein (8g per cup!), which is better than other non-dairy milks like oat or almond.  If you prefer something else, you can use oat milk or regular dairy milk (if you are not dairy-free).
Sweetener: I personally love the flavor of maple syrup, but you can also use honey or simple syrup instead.
