What does sweet potato toast taste like?
Sweet potato toast has a unique and delicious taste that’s slightly different from regular bread. When cooked, the sweet potato takes on a slightly sweet, nutty flavor with a subtle earthiness. It has a firm texture that holds up well to toppings and spreads, and a slightly chewy consistency that’s satisfying to eat.

How to Air Fry Sweet Potato Slices for toast
Trick #1: Cut Your Sweet Potato the Right Thickness
Approximately 1/4 inch thick will create the a good balance between firm and still a little crispy.
If you’re sweet potato is too thick it will not cook evenly with the other pieces and you may have some undercooked parts.
If you’re sweet potato is too thin it may burn and be brittle.
Trick #2: Coat lightly in oil
A little cooking spray oil can add more flavor and help your sweet potato toast crisp up. You just need a small spritz on each side of the toast. I use avocado oil or olive oil.
If you use no oil your sweet potato will be dry.
If you use too much spray oil it will be wet and greasy (and may burn on the edges more).
Trick #3: Toast in multiple batches
It’s really important to not overcrowd your air fryer basket. I have a small basket so I cook 2 toasts at a time. Make sure to spread them in a single layer. Air fry at 400 degrees F for 6 minutes, then flip, and cook for another 5-6 minutes.
How to make Sweet Potato Toast in the toaster oven
You can make sweet potato toast on a baking sheet in a toaster oven.
Slice your sweet potatoes as you would for the air fryer recipe and bake for 15-20 minutes at 400 F (flipping halfway) until tender and lightly browned on the edges.
FAQ
That’s really up to your own personal preference. The skin has lots of extra nutrients and texture so I usually keep it on. Some people prefer to peel the sweet potato for a smoother texture.
Yes, you can make sweet potato toast ahead of time and reheat it in the air fryer for a few minutes until it’s warmed through and crispy then add your toppings.
Cutting sweet potatoes can be a little nerve wracking! Here are some tips to cut it safely into thin pieces:
1. Use a sharp knife. Dull knives are more likely to slip because you have to apply more pressure to cut.
2. Microwave the sweet potato for 2-3 minutes to soften it before cutting.
3. Use a mandolin slicer (properly). This is a kitchen device that is very useful for slicing veggies into thin pieces. Make sure to use a mitt or glove to protect yourself.
No, you don’t have to soak your sweet potato before air frying. However, it’s a good idea to wash and dry the sweet potato before slicing it, especially if you’re going to leave the skin on. This will help remove any dirt or debris that may be on the skin.
Tips
- Be choosy. Select only the best sweet potatoes for this toast. The best are ones that are long and skinny so you can get toast-size pieces.
- Turn up the heat. Preheat your air fryer for 3-5 minutes so that it’s ready to go for your sweet potato. It will cook much more efficiently when pre-heated.
- Make it mini! Instead of cutting your sweet potato into long slices, consider cutting it into circles which is easier. Then you can make “mini” toasts.

I bought a package Of organic sweet potato toast, and I loved it. Wondering if I follow your recipe could I freeze them and take them out as needed?
Hi Mary- I have not tried freezing the toast- but I don’t see why you couldn’t freeze it, toast it at a lower temp, and still have a great outcome. Let me know if it works when you try it!
