Avocado Brownies

These fudgy, moist, decadent avocado brownies are a healthier guilt-free treat. The hidden avocado creates a fudgier, rich texture, making these brownies even better than their traditional counterpart! These are vegan and potentially gluten-free as well!

What you’ll love about this:

  • Easy – You just need a food processor to make these avocado brownies!
  • Flavorful – Fudgy, moist, chocolately…so good!
  • Healthier– Oil-free
  • Vegan, dairy-free, & potentially gluten-free

The first time I heard about an avocado brownie, I was a little skeptical. Can’t you taste the avocado? Will there be chunks of avocado in it? This just sounds a little weird…

One of my family members brought them to a party and I had to at least give it a try….and WOW – it was even better than a regular brownie! (and no – you cannot taste the avocado!)

Avocado brownies are a lot fudgier thanks to the high fat content of the avocado. Avocados have that good-for-you fat (monounsaturated fat) so you these brownies are healthier while not compromising any of that flavor!

What is a flax egg?

A flax egg is a vegan egg substitute made by mixing 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water, allowing it to sit for about 5 minutes until it thickens. It mimics the binding properties of an egg in baking recipes.

How to Make Avocado Brownies

Blend Avocado

Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare an 8×8 glass pan with parchment paper.

To a food processor, add your avocado, non-dairy milk, flax egg, vanilla, and sugar. Blend until combined and no chunks of avocado.

Add Dry Ingredients and Blend

Next, add your cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt. Blend only until combined (over blending can create tougher brownies).

Add Chocolate Chips

Pour in your chocolate chips and stir until combined.

Bake

Pour your batter in your pan. Optional & recommended: Top with more chocolate chips.

Bake for 25-28 minutes. The brownies will still be soft but will firm up as they cool. Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars and enjoying. You can enjoy them chilled, room temp, or warmed with some ice cream on top-yum!

Store in the fridge for best results.

How do I store leftover avocado brownies?

Store leftover avocado brownies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. I do not recommend storing these on the counter. They have a higher moisture content and are high risk for molding fast at room temperature.

For longer storage, wrap the brownies tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container to freeze for up to 3 months.

Can you taste the avocado in avocado brownies?

No, you cannot taste the avocado. The other ingredients like cocoa powder and sugar overpower any avocado flavor. The avocado contributes to the moistness and richness of the brownies without any avocado taste.

Pro Tips

  • Puree the avocado and other ingredients until completely smooth to avoid any green chunks in your brownies. Using a food processor or blender can help achieve a velvety consistency. I do not recommend mashing by hand because you will still have chunks no matter how hard you try (trust me- I’ve tried!)

Notes

⭐️What is a flax egg?
A flax egg is a vegan substitute for a traditional egg, made by mixing ground flaxseed with water. The mixture forms a gel-like consistency that works as a binder in our brownie recipe. Mix the ground flax with water in a small bowl and let sit for 5 minutes.
⭐️Why sift flour and cocoa powder?
Sifting flour and cocoa powder removes lumps, creating a smoother and more even texture in baked goods. It also helps to aerate these ingredients, contributing to a lighter and fluffier brownie!

Mini chocolate chips – To keep this recipe vegan/dairy-free, use vegan chocolate chips (I love to use Enjoy Life mini chips!) You can also use regular sized chips if you prefer.
