Why I Switched to Soy Milk – And You Should Too
For a long time, I enjoyed drinking almond milk and oat milk. They were tasty and made my smoothies and coffee delicious. However, after doing a deep dive into nutrition of non-dairy and dairy milks, I decided to switch to soy milk. It turns out that soy milk is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients that help my health and can even prevent cancer.

When it Comes to Protein, Soy milk is King
One of the main reasons I switched to soy milk is its high protein content. Unlike almond milk and oat milk, soy milk has about the same amount of protein as cow’s milk (soy milk has 3-4g protein/100 mL and cow’s milk has 3.2-3.5g/100mL). Almond milk and oat milk fall short (almond milk has 0.4-0.6 g/100mL and oat milk has 0.8-1.0g/100mL) This is important because protein helps our bodies build and repair tissues. Plus, it keeps me feeling full longer.
The Nutritional Powerhouse
Soy milk also contains essential vitamins and minerals. It is rich in calcium and vitamin D, which are important for strong bones. Many brands of soy milk are fortified with these nutrients, making them a great option for those who don’t drink dairy. This means I can enjoy it without worrying about missing out on important nutrients.
Another reason I love soy milk is its health benefits. Studies show that drinking soy milk can help lower cholesterol levels and promote heart health. It also contains antioxidants that can help protect our bodies from diseases. Knowing that I am making a healthy choice is a big part of why I switched.
Cancer Prevention
High soy milk consumption is associated with reduced cancer risk, particularly for breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers. A meta-analysis found that consumption of 23g of soy per day reduced cancer risk by 28%.
The evidence is strongest for breast cancer prevention, including lower breast cancer incidence. For breast cancer survivors, post-diagnosis soy intake was associated with a reduced risk of mortality.

Sip Sustainability
Soy milk has a substantially lower environmental impact than cow’s milk across most metrics, while almond milk shows mixed results.
Soy milk productive generates 59-71% lower greenhouse gas emissions per 250mL serving than cow’s milk.
Soy milk also uses substantially less water than dairy, but almond milk requires significantly more water than soy and dairy milk.

In conclusion, switching to soy milk has been a great decision for me. It offers more protein, essential nutrients, and health benefits compared to almond and oat milk. Plus, it supports my values about sustainability. If you’re looking for a nutritious non-dairy milk, I highly recommend giving soy milk a try!

Which brand of soy milk to you recommend?
Hi Rachel,
I always choose an organic version. I honestly love my local grocery store’s soy milk – the brand is Simple Truth (this is a Kroger Brand). I also will buy Silk sometimes, but there prices have gone up. I will occasionally splurge and get High Protein Silk Soy Milk (13g protein/serving). Hope that helps! 🙂
